Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPY | LONDON, SURREY & ONLINE
There are many reasons why someone might consider therapy. Sometimes we know exactly what's troubling us. At other times, we simply have a sense that something isn't quite right.
Whatever has brought you here, I offer a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space where we can explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences together.
LITTLE ABOUT ME
Hello, my name is Stephen.
I'm a fully qualified psychodynamic psychotherapist, registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), working in accordance with their code of ethics.
I work in private practice with adults, both face to face in Marylebone, central London, and Esher, Surrey, and online with clients in the UK and internationally.
I understand that starting therapy can feel intimidating, particularly if you've never experienced it before. You may be unsure about what to expect, what to talk about, or whether therapy is even the right thing for you.
PSYCHODYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY
The terminology of therapy is often confusing, but the way I work means that although whatever has brought you to therapy is manifesting itself in your day-to-day life, through your behaviours, thoughts and feelings, I believe its roots could lie in your past, possibly as far back as early childhood.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy involves exploring not only the things we're aware of, but also the unconscious thoughts, feelings and experiences that may influence how we see ourselves and relate to others.
This allows for a deeper exploration of the difficulties we face, rather than simply concentrating on the immediate problem.

WORKING TOGETHER
No two people are the same, and neither are their experiences of therapy. The work we do together will be unique to you, your experiences and the relationship we develop.
I don't believe therapy is about being told what to do, or being given a set of answers.
I want us to collaborate, to really try to understand your thoughts, feelings and experiences, and explore how they may be affecting your life.
It is this relationship, and the opportunity to explore things openly and honestly, that I believe is central to the therapeutic process.
how i can help
Perhaps you're feeling anxious, experiencing low mood or dealing with a lot of stress.
Maybe you've experienced trauma, suffered a loss, or are struggling with relationships, work or your sense of self.
You may have been dealing with something for a long time, or perhaps a recent experience has left you feeling that you need some help and support.
People come to therapy for all sorts of reasons, including:
Anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, loneliness, anger and difficulties managing emotions.
Trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, abuse, sexual abuse, discrimination, self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
Family difficulties, relationship issues, infertility, bereavement, loss, grief, sexual concerns and questions around identity.
Burnout, work-related stress, addiction, sex addiction, eating disorders, hoarding, obsessive compulsive disorder and other difficulties that may affect everyday life.
These are just some of the presenting problems I can work with, and there are many more besides.

A PRINCIPLE AREA OF FOCUS
One of my principal areas of focus is working with neurodivergent people, particularly those with ADHD and autism.
As a trained assessor for both conditions, and with extensive experience working with neurodivergent people, I bring an understanding of neurodevelopmental differences alongside my work as a psychodynamic psychotherapist.
These are two separate, but closely linked, areas of my professional practice.
Living in a world largely created and maintained for neurotypical people can be incredibly difficult. Things that others may take for granted can demand enormous amounts of energy, and the experience of feeling different can affect our relationships, confidence and sense of self.
I offer a space where we can explore these experiences together, and work towards a better understanding of the difficulties you may face.
A PRINCIPLE AREA OF FOCUS
Bereavement and loss are another particular area of focus in my work.
Losing someone important to us can affect every part of our lives, sometimes in ways we might not expect or fully understand.
Grief is a very individual experience. There isn't a particular way we should feel, or a set amount of time in which we should begin to feel differently.
For some people, loss may also bring up earlier experiences, difficult relationships or feelings that have been present for many years.
Therapy can offer a space to explore these experiences, and the impact they may be having on your life.

GETTING STARTED
I understand that making contact with a therapist can sometimes feel like a big step.
That's why I offer a free, no-obligation introductory telephone call, usually lasting around ten minutes.
It's an opportunity for me to understand a little about you and what's been going on, and for you to ask any questions you may have.
From there, we can arrange an initial consultation of up to 90 minutes, allowing us to explore your life and history in more detail.
WHERE I WORK
I see clients face to face in consulting rooms in Marylebone, in the Harley Street district of central London, and in Esher, Surrey.
I also work online with clients throughout the UK and internationally.
Sessions usually take place once or twice weekly, depending on what we agree is appropriate.
LET'S TALK
If you feel that I might be able to help, or would simply like to find out a little more about how I work, please do get in touch.
There's no obligation to take things further, and I'm happy to answer any questions you might have.
I look forward to hearing from you.
