Getting to know the person behind the practice.

I'm Stephen, a fully qualified psychodynamic psychotherapist working with adults in London, Surrey and online.

I believe that finding a therapist you feel comfortable with is an important part of the process. Before deciding whether therapy is right for you, it's only natural to want to know a little about the person you'll be talking to.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME

Hello, I'm Stephen.

I'm a fully qualified psychodynamic psychotherapist, registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), and work in accordance with their code of ethics.

I see clients in private practice, with consulting rooms in Marylebone, central London, and Esher, Surrey. I also offer online and telephone sessions.

People come to therapy for many different reasons. Some have a particular difficulty they want to explore, while others may have been feeling unhappy, anxious or unsettled for some time without necessarily understanding why.

I recognise that talking about personal experiences, particularly with someone you've only just met, isn't always easy.

My role is to offer a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space where we can begin to explore whatever has brought you to therapy, at a pace that feels appropriate.

HOW I WORK

Understanding the past, making sense of the present.

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I believe that some of the difficulties we experience in the present may have their roots in our past, sometimes going back as far as early childhood.

Our experiences, relationships and the ways we've learnt to understand ourselves can influence how we think, feel and behave, often without us being fully aware of it.

The work we do together involves exploring these experiences and looking at how they may be affecting your life today.

That doesn't mean everything is necessarily about childhood, or that we must spend every session looking backwards.

It means being curious about what might lie beneath the difficulties you're experiencing, and giving ourselves the opportunity to understand them more fully.

WORKING TOGETHER

The relationship matters.

One of the things I place particular importance on is the relationship between therapist and client.

I don't see therapy as a process in which I simply tell you what to do, or offer advice about how you should live your life.

Instead, I believe we work collaboratively, developing an understanding of your experiences, thoughts and feelings together.

You may find that some things are easier to talk about than others. There may be moments when you feel uncertain, uncomfortable or unsure what to say.

All of these experiences can form part of the work.

My aim is to provide an environment in which you feel able to speak openly, without fear of judgement, and where we can explore whatever comes up between us.

MY EXPERIENCE

Working with different experiences and difficulties.

Alongside general psychodynamic psychotherapy, there are particular areas in which I have developed experience and professional interest.

Neurodiversity

I work extensively with neurodivergent people, particularly those with ADHD and autism, and am also a trained assessor for both conditions.

I recognise that being neurodivergent can affect many aspects of everyday life, including relationships, work, emotional wellbeing and how we understand ourselves.

My approach is to consider the whole person, rather than concentrating solely on a diagnosis or a particular set of difficulties.

Bereavement and loss

Bereavement and loss are also important areas of my work.

Grief can be complicated, and people experience it in very different ways. Sometimes the loss of someone close to us can also bring up feelings connected with earlier experiences or relationships.

I offer a space to explore these feelings, without expectations about how someone should grieve or how long that process should take.

QUALIFICATIONS & PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION

Professional, confidential and ethical.

I am registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and work in accordance with their professional and ethical standards.

My work is grounded in psychodynamic psychotherapy, alongside my specialist experience working with neurodivergent people and my training in ADHD and autism assessment.

BEYOND THE QUALIFICATIONS

A little more about me.

I appreciate that qualifications and professional experience are important, but they don't necessarily tell you very much about the person you'll be sitting opposite.

TAKING THE FIRST STEP

Perhaps we could begin with a conversation.

Choosing a therapist is a personal decision, and it's important that you feel comfortable with the person you decide to work with.

I offer a free introductory telephone call of around ten minutes, with no obligation to arrange further appointments.

It's an opportunity to tell me a little about what has brought you here, ask any questions you might have and see whether we feel we could work together.
